Upon hearing the terms chastity, purity, and abstinence, what comes to mind? For many people the mental pictures probably involve of a bunch of seemingly boring people who live mundane, uneventful lives. My name is Gina Rossi. I am a junior at Centennial High School, and I attend Our Lady of the Meadows Catholic Church in Pueblo, Colorado. I would like to share with you the importance of chastity, purity, and abstinence in my life.
As both a teenage girl and a Catholic, I have committed to carrying out God’s call of purity, respect, and temperance. In this path I have chosen, mundane and boring are absolutely not the words to describe my existence. In fact, by submerging myself in God’s purifying grace, my life has been fulfilled in ways I never thought possible.
Many of my peers are convinced that my choice of lifestyle causes me to miss out on many of the “fun” aspects of my youth. On the contrary, God puts the pieces together and fills in all the gaps. With Him, I don’t need anything of this world!
While many people are constantly being torn apart by the ways of the world—i.e., abusive relationships, teen pregnancy and negative self image, and a contagious secular media—I feel completely satisfied with my decision to stay abstinent until marriage.
So what exactly is chastity then? When asked to compose this article, I realized that I needed a solid definition of chastity means to today’s society. The Merriam-Webster dictionary entry for this word reads, “Abstention from unlawful sexual intercourse.” Sure, that is true, but chastity reaches way beyond just refraining from intercourse. To me, it means purity in both conduct and thought. It is a way of life. It is saving yourself for your future spouse. It is respecting the human body and treating it as a temple of the Holy Spirit. It is absolutely not just a set of rules or guidelines for what one is permitted to do within a relationship.
I understand that living chastely requires strength to stand strong in today’s crazy, mixed-up world. To live purely takes sacrifice; it’s not just forgoing sexual activity, but also being willing to be firmly rooted in the beliefs that faith provides.
With that, I would like to invite each and every person reading this to consider pursuing a chaste life. Just think about the rewards it can bring to your life, your relationship with God, and what an impact it will have on today’s society.
